Genus with over 20 hardy, herbaceous, fleshy-rooted perennials also known as comfrey. They produce bell-shaped, hanging white, blue, pink or purple flowers and attractive, veined, ovate to elliptic foliage. Species from this genus are used in gardening as green manure and in herbal medicine. These coarse plants are well-placed in a wild garden and make good groundcover, but must be kept in check as they grow vigorously.
