Canary Island Date Palm Overview

Phoenix canariensis is a spiny, evergreen palm species in the Arecaceae family, more commonly known by the names Canary Palm or Canary Island Date Palm. This species has an attractive bushy habit, producing long, arching foliage and small yellow flowers. It is hardy to -5 degrees Celsius, plant in a position of partial sun, in well-draining soil for optimal growth. This species has earnt a Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit. It doesn't cope well with wet winters and will require protection from freezing weather if grown in temperate regions.
