Barrenwort Overview

Epimedium × rubrum is a deciduous perennial from the Berberidaceae family. Commonly known by the name Red Barrenwort, this plant is an artificial hybrid. It grows through the use of underground rhizomes, typically reaching 30cm tall. Young leaves have a red tinge and show attractive autumn colouration. Flowers are red and yellow-cream in colour, measuring around 2cm wide. Grow in partial shade and well-draining soil. This plant has earnt a Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit.
