This is an evergreen broadleaf tree. It will produce smooth red-brown bark that will peel in thin sheets. The leaves are glossy and green and about 7-13 cm long. In the spring you will find large terminal panicles of white to pinkish, bell shaped flowers; they are followed by clusters of bright red and orange berries. Also known as Arbutus procera Douglas non Sol.

Propagation is by semi-ripe cuttings in the late summer.
Seed in the autumn.

Other uses of Madroña
Specimen, ornamental bark and fruits. Attracts butterflies. The fruits are high in vitamin C and edible, if not particularly tasty. The leaves and bark are used by Indigenous Americans as a remedy for sore throats, for stomach complaints and skin problems. The wood makes very good firewood as it burns at a high temperature and for a long time.
