A genus of around 35 flowering herbaceous and shrub species found across Europe, the Middle East and Northern Africa. Naturally they grow on rocky cliffs and grassland. They do best with prolonged hot summer weather and can tolerate poor quality, dry soils very well. Their flowers are small and attractive, usually yellow, white or red in colour.

Propagate by softwood cuttings in summer.
Seed in autumn.
