Overview

Evergreen shrub species that typically grows to around a metre tall, producing dark green, lance-shaped foliage. Flowers are 2-lipped, white and surrounded by large, showy yellow modified leaves, termed bracts. Pachystachys lutea is a tender species, it is grown outdoors in warm and tropical climates and indoors as a container plant in colder climates.

Common problems

White flies and Red spider mites may be troublesome when grown indoors. Provide good ventilation to keep plants healthy.

Cuttings

Root soft wood cuttings in summer (using bottom heat will help too) and a moist light potting mix.

Pot plant

Plant in a fast draining potting soil mix. Keep the soil damp and water frequently during summer, sparingly winter time. Repot every 2 - 3 years.

Indoor plant

Place indoors in areas of bright light but no direct sunlight.
