Aptenia Overview

Mesembryanthemum cordifolia, formerly Aptenia cordifolia, is an evergreen, succulent groundcover or creeping perennial plant in the Aizoaceae family. It is easy to care for, thriving in hot, dry, sunny areas. It grows quite slowly and makes a beautiful container plant and it is commonly known by the name Baby Sun Rose. Also known as Heart-Leaf Ice Plant, this species produces glossy succulent leaves and bright magenta-pink flowers. It is attractively placed cascading down a wall or hedge. ZA Distribution: Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo.

Common problems with Aptenia

If soil is kept too moist, roots can rot, causing poor growth, chlorosis, and plant death.

    How to harvest Aptenia

Cuttings can be taken at any time, but it roots faster in warmer months.

    How to propagate Aptenia

    Cuttings

Take 10 cm cuttings and root them in water. Cut off any leaves that may be under water. Roots should appear in a few days. With lots of roots plant them in potting soil keeping the soil damp.
