White-wood (Eng.), Witbos (Afr.)
Maerua cafra is an evergreen, large shrub or small tree which is widely distributed along the eastern side of South Africa (from Humansdorp in the south) to parts of Gauteng and the Northern Province. It grows up to a height of 2-9m, depending on the local conditions. The light-coloured trunk accounts for the name "white-wood" or "witbos" in Afrikaans. This tree is not commonly used in landscape designs as it not often available in commercial nurseries.
