Peace Lily Overview
Plants in the genus Spathiphyllum are commonly known by the name Peace Lily. They tolerate neglect well, making them a popular houseplant. These plants grow well in shaded conditions but flower better with more light. It's best to keep evenly moist, but can cope with some forgetful watering. Spathiphyllum is a genus of around 51 evergreen, rhizomatous perennial species in the aroid family, Araceae. They are native to tropical regions of the Americas and southeastern Asia and commonly known as Peace Lilies. These plants are grown for their attractive foliage. They produce a flowering structure known as a spadix, this is a spike inflorescence with small blooms arranged on a fleshy stem and surrounded by a long white, yellow or green-coloured modified leaf known as a spathe. It has also been found effective at absorbing certain contaminants from the air. Mildly toxic to humans and animals on ingestion and the foliage can irritate skin.
