Hyacinth Overview
Hyacinthus orientalis is a bulbous perennial in the Asparagaceae family. It is renowned for its beautiful blue flower colour and sweet, long-lasting fragrance, producing a spectacular flowering display, indoors and outdoors. Even though this plant is exotic and requires a cold period to flower, it can flourish well in many regions of the world including South Africa and the UK. It's often planted in containers, often grown indoors as a houseplant and sometimes grown hydroponically in a glass bowl with rocks and water.
Common problems with Hyacinth
Botrytis fungus can attack and damage the entire plant if left untreated. Dust with fungicide and try to increase ventilation. Aphids also attack the flower buds. A simple organic method is to blast them off with soapy warm water in a spray bottle.
How to harvest Hyacinth
Harvest the fragrant flowers during late winter or spring. Harvest bulbs in summer months.
How to propagate Hyacinth
Division
Divide tubers during summer. Replant during autumn. Plant 10 cm deep and space 7 cm apart. Plant in well-drained, moderately fertile soil in a sunny position.
