September Bush Overview
Polygala myrtifolia is an adaptive pioneer shrub that produces pretty pea-like purple-mauve flowers, flowering profusely in springtime (august-september in South Africa) and can flower all year round. Reaching an average height of between 1.8-3.5m, this species is easy to grow and a waterwise choice. It can tolerate semi-shade conditions and responds well to light pruning. Commonly found growing on dunes, rocky slopes, in forests, along streams, in scrub and open grassland. It can adapt to both coastal and inland climates. It attracts insects to the garden and can be used as a decorative hedge. An easy growing and rewarding garden plant. ZA Distribution: Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape.
