A genus of ferns comprising around 300 species in the Pteridaceae family native to the tropics and subtropics worldwide. Members of this genus are evergreen, semi-evergreen or deciduous with pinnate fronds. They are commonly cultivated as houseplants and go by the common name brake. One species, P. vittata, has been found to hyperaccumulate arsenic from contaminated soils and could be used in bioremediation clean-up projects.
