Common broom Overview
Widely distributed in central and western Europe including the UK. Is tall and vigorous species reaching 1.8-2.5m in height . Bright yellow-orange flowers appear in late spring and early summer. The black seed pods may be abundant, ripening in mid-summer and scattering their seed with a sharp, cracking sound in hot, dry weather. In cooler areas of some southern hemisphere countries it has become a troublesome weed. 'Pendulus' is a rare cultivar with pendulous branches.
