Overview

A genus containing 119 species of terrestrial, lithophytic or epiphytic orchids in the Cypripedioideae (lady's slipper) subfamily of the Orchidaceae family. They are native to Southeast Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, southern China, and islands in the Western Pacific. Unlike many other orchids, members of this genus do not have pseudobulbs; instead they produce robust short stems from which the leathery leaves arise. The flowers are attractive to orchid collectors for their unusual slipper-like pouch on the lower lip that the plant uses to trap pollinating insects.
