Genus with around 38 hardy, deciduous, herbaceous, perennial species typically found at the margins of water. They produce attractive, brown, cylindrical seed heads above linear foliage and are commonly called bullrush, reedmace, reed, cattail and water sausage in different regions. These species are most often found in wetland habitats in the Northern Hemisphere. They possess edible rhizomes and are best grown near deep water to will limit their spread.
