A genus of around 15 flowering annual and perennial herbaceous hairy plants in the Malvaceae family (mallow), native to Africa, Asia and North Australia. They can reach heights of 2m, with large, finger shaped, lobed, toothed leaves and their flowers are 4-7cm wide with 5 white to yellow petals and often a red or purple spot at the base. Several species are tropical crops, grown for their edible pods and leaves (okra and gumbo) which are consumed as vegetables.
How to propagate Okra
By seed in the spring. Seed can be sown under protection at about 12C in late winter or early spring.
