Broom Overview
This genus includes around 60 species of deciduous or evergreen shrubs, similar to those of the genus Genista. They originate from open scrub and heathland locations in Europe, North Africa and Western Asia. Commonly known as brooms, Cytisus species are grown for their abundance of bright, pea-like flowers, which are often strongly scented and may be red, orange or yellow. Though the majority are medium-sized shrubs, smaller species and cultivars also exist, which are suitable for rock gardens and small beds.
