Hazel

Hazel Overview

Genus containing around 17 hardy, deciduous tree and large shrubs. Commonly known as hazel, they are from temperate climates in the Northern Hemisphere. Cultivated for their growth habit, edible fruits (hazelnuts) and pretty catkin flowers that are produced in early spring. Leaves are simple and rounded, with doubly-serrated edges. Catkins are sexed, with male catkins coloured pale yellow, measuring between 5-12cm long and female catkins are smaller and hidden in buds, appearing red due to their 1-3mm long styles.
