A monotypic genus comprising one species of Summer-flowering hardy perennial in the Lamiaceae family from Central and Southern Europe. Commonly known as bastard balm, it is an aromatic plant with sometimes purple-blotched white or pink labiate flowers usually hanging from one side of the flowering stem on peduncles. In the wild it is found in shady deciduous woods and in cultivation does best in a shady spot with well-drained soil.
