Genus with around 174 subshrubs, shrubs and small trees, with some annual species. Foliage is mostly arranged alternately, with some species producing opposite arrangements. Leaves are simple with smooth margins and flowers consist of 5 petal-like structures called tepals and 5 stamens, these are usually yellow, white or pink. Species from this genus are known by the general name saltwort for their tolerance of saline conditions.
