Blood lily Overview
Genus of around 9 bulbous species that produce dense, fluffy, spherical, red flowerheads atop bare stems. Some species in this genus are called blood lily and some have been used in traditional medicine. These are typically grown for their ornamental flowers and they may be planted outside in frost-free locations. Flowers lead on to yellow, orange or red berries. Originating from woodland and rocky cliff environments in Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, these species should be grown in greenhouses in frost-prone climates.
