Giant Stapelia Overview
Stapelia gigantea is a spineless, evergreen perennial succulent from the Apocynaceae family. It forms 4-angled, upright, toothed stems and also known by the names Giant Stapelia, Starfish Flower and Carrion Flower. Edges of the stems may produce small, ephemeral leaves and are often indented. This plant doesn't typically exceed 20cm in height. It is grown for the succulent stems and large, showy, star-shaped, foul-scented, patterned, textured, hairy, creamy-yellow blooms with red markings. The flowers can reach 35cm in diameter. Giant Stapelia tends to grow in clumps, branching near the base and is a popular houseplant. It may be planted outside in rockeries in warm climates. This plant has earnt a Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit.
