Tecoma stans is a perennial species in the Bignoniaceae family. Originating from tropical and subtropical climates in the Americas, this attractive plant is cultivated as an ornamental for its showy, bright yellow flowers. Blooms are trumpet-shaped, with 5 petals, leading onto flattened seedpods with papery wings. Foliage is divided into leaflets, these are oppositely arranged on stems with one leaflet at the tip. Leaves are oval to lance-shaped and they have sharply serrated margins. This species can cope with periods of drought, growing best in mild climates. The flowers are popular with pollinating insects such as bees and butterflies. They are also popular with hummingbirds.
