Sacred Bamboo Overview
A monotypic genus containing one species of erect, evergreen shrub in the Berberidaceae family native to East Asia from the Himalayas to Japan. Known as heavenly bamboo, N. domestica, the sole species, has simple or divided pinnate leaves with good Autumn colour and sprays of white star-shaped flowers sometimes followed by bright red berries. They are popular in Japanese gardens and there are many cultivars available.
