This genus of around 40 species of annual or perennial plants in the Lamiaceae (mint, dead nettle) family is native to western parts of North America. They have highly aromatic foliage and terminal inflorescences comprising clusters of papery flowers in shades of white, pink, red or purple. They are cultivated for their scented foliage that can be used to make herbal tea. They are best grown in well-drained soil in full sun and are suitable as rock garden plants or in alpine houses.
