This evergreen, rosette-forming perennial grows up to 90cms in height. The leaves are rigid and fleshy, taper to sharp spikes and can reach a length of 1.8 metres. After between four and eight years of growth, a 6 meter stem grows out from the rosette and clusters of yellow flowers form. The plant dies after flowering.
