Spanish Fennel Flower Overview

Nigella hispanica is a bushy annual species from the Ranunculaceae family. It is commonly called Spanish Fennel Flower and produces ferny foliage, spiky flowers and bulbous ornamental seed-heads. It originates from France, Portugal, Spain, where it is naturally found on neglected patches of land. It typically grows to around 60cm tall, producing bright blue blooms with contrasting dark red centres. Flowers lead onto inflated, ornamental seedpods, coloured pale green with dark red flushing. The dried seedpods may be used in floral arrangements. This species is part of the Royal Horticultural Society “Plants for Pollinators” initiative to showcase plants which support pollinator populations by providing ample amounts of nectar and/ or pollen. A great choice for encouraging pollinating insect wildlife into your garden!
