Umbrella pine Overview
This genus is monotypic and contains only one species. Sciadopitys verticillata is known as a living fossil, in the Sciadopityaceae family of conifers. It is an evergreen tree endemic to Japan that is commonly known as the umbrella pine because of its umbrella-like whorls of leaves. In cultivation it requires a sheltered position in full sun and an acid soil.
