A genus of 113 accepted species of herbaceous perennials, or evergreen subshrubs and shrubs in the Lamiaceae family native to a region that stretches from the Mediterranean basin through central Asia to China. The plants are often hairy with rough sage-like leaves and erect stems carrying whorls of tubular, hooded flowers in yellow, pink, purple or white. Commonly known as Jerusalem sage, Turkish sage or lampwick plant some species are cultivated for Mediterranean planting schemes.
