Slipper Orchid Overview

Cypripedium is a genus consisting of around 60 species of terrestrial hardy orchid, including many nothospecies created by a natural hybridisation between two species. This genus is known by the name slipper orchids for their complex flower appearance. They can bear 1-12 flowers, with most species producing around 2 or 3 and common colours are pink, white and yellow. Distribution ranges across most of the Northern Hemisphere, including Europe, the USA and Central Asia in both tropical and tundra habitats. Some species in this genus are well adapted to cold conditions, growing underneath snow and flowering upon its melting. This genus also contains many rare species in danger of extinction.
