Large genus with approximately 430 hardy evergreen or deciduous perennials distributed predominantly in the Americas, ranging into Canada. They are grown for their foliage and fruits and are adapted well to dry soils, so will suit an exposed position. They feature dense but flexible stems, which make good windbreaks when planted together,so they may provide shelter from winds. Flowers are small, white or yellow and rich in nectar, some species make good honey plants for bees and a few in this genus are under extinction threat due to habitat destruction.
