Genus with around 55 species of evergreen perennial in the Bromeliaceae family. They form rosettes of strap-shaped foliage with toothed edges. Tubular flowers are surrounded by modified leaves known as bracts, these are said to resemble birds nests, hence the common name birds-nest bromeliad.
