Genus containing roughly 42 small, perennial bulb species. They are found naturally across Southern Europe, Africa, India and the Middle East. foliage is linear and flowers resemble bluebells, borne on unbranched stalks in groups, but are coloured white, yellow or orange generally. Cultivated as popular ornamental bulbs, but do not favour cold, wet winter seasons and are best placed in a protective cold frame in regions with harsh winters.
