A genus containing 4 species of herbaceous perennial plants in the Lamiaceae family native to regions of Europe and Asia but widely cultivated and naturalised in many non-native countries. Like other members of the mint family they have square stems and alternate pairs of aromatic, oval leaves. Some species are grown as culinary herbs, for example M. officinalis, or lemon balm.
