Overview

Alocasia longiloba is a striking herbaceous perennial in the Araceae family. Originating from tropical rainforest environments, this species is native to Singapore. It typically grows to over a metre in height, producing a thickened lower stem, termed a corm, this can reach 60cm in length. Leaves are produced alternately on individual, mottled brown stems, they are large, up to 85cm long by 40cm wide at their biggest. Leaves are long and arrow-shaped, coloured dark green on the upper surface, with attractive, white veins and light green to purple on the underside. Flowers measure between 6-13cm in length, they are enclosed by a spathe structure, coloured cream-white or green-tinged. Fruits are round and bright orange, they measure approximately 4-7mm in length and contain one seed each.
