Common Toothwort Overview
Lathraea squamaria is a parasitic plant in the Orobanchaceae family. It is known by the name Common Toothwort. This species is native to temperate regions of continental Europe to central Asia. It grows on the roots of a range of host plants, often Corylus (Hazel) and Alus (Alder) species. It completely lacks chlorophyll and thus doesn't produce true leaves or photosynthesise. Often found in damp woodland environments, it can parasitise a variety of garden ornamental trees and shrubs including those in the genera Corylus, Ulmus, Fraxinus, Alnus, Juglans and Fagus.
