Euphorbia trigona is also known commonly as African Milk Tree, which refers to the milky sap that is released when the plant is cut. This sap is caustic and poisonous. It contains latex, which is a skin and eye irritant, and can also cause stomach upset if consumed. This succulent perennial species originates from Central Africa. It is not however a cactus! It has small, short-lived leaves that develop along the stem ridges alongside thorns. Thorns grow in pairs and the single, individual leaves form between them. Flowers are small, discrete, cup-shaped and yellow-white in colour, and do not typically appear on potted specimens.
