Chloranthus contains around 14 herbaceous perennial or sub-shrub species. They possess foliage arranged in pairs or whorls, leaves are oval to lance-shaped and have irregular teeth along the edges. Flowers are white or yellow and lack distinct petals, they may be upright or hanging in their growth habit and lead onto green, white or red berry fruits.
