Plants in this genus are commonly called gamagrass. They members of the poaceae or grass family and are widespread in the Western Hemisphere where they are cultivated for grazing. They can tolerate wet conditions and acid soils and are adapted to recovery after prolonged periods of flooding. A number of species formerly in this genus have been reassigned to different genera.
