    Iris Overview

Iris is a large genus containing around 360 species of rhizomatous or bulbous perennial flowering plants in the Iridaceae family. They are native to the temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere and found in diverse habitats ranging from arid, semi-desert areas, colder montane regions, meadows and marshes. Leaves are narrow and strap-like and fan-shaped, symmetrical flowers are borne on erect stems. Irises are widely cultivated and many varieties and hybrids are available bred for their attractive showy flowers in diverse often intense colours.
