Overview

Genus contains around 21 hardy perennials that typically flower in summer. These originate from a diverse range of habitats, from dry scrubland to wet, swampy environments. They are mainly grown for their roots, from which sweet liquorice is derived. Flowers are white and pea-like, produced on unbranched stems. Foliage is sticky and divided pinnately.
