Overview

A genus of rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plants in the Lamiaceae (mint or dead-nettle) family originating from North America. They have an erect growth habit with toothed, lanceolate leaves, square stems and spikes of tubular flowers. Commonly known as lionshearts or false dragonheads, in the wild they are found in damp but sunny habitats. The most commonly cultivated species is P. virginiana, the so-called obedient plant because flowers pushed to one side often remain in that position.
