Perennial species with a clumping, bushy growth habit. Foliage is coated in silvery hairs, blue-green in colour, toothed and divided into lance-shaped leaflets. Flowers are produced on vertical spikes, arranged in pointed clusters. These open from the base upwards and are coloured red-purple.
