Consists of around 141 evergreen shrubs and subshrubs, often grown for their showy flowers, fruits and foliage, these make nice ornamental garden shrubs. Some species grow through the use of underground rhizomes. Foliage is leathery and simple, ranging from bright green to dark purple colours. Flowers are delicate and small, usually white, with some pink patterning and hanging from branched or unbranched stems. These lead on to bright, spherical fruits ranging in colour from red to bright purple to almost black.
