Maties Gardening Society

We are a student-driven community garden. Any student from Stellenbosch University is allowed to join, regardless of your plant knowledge or skill set. The garden is located on Welgevallen experimental farm and is run as a collaboration between students and the University of Stellenbosch. Students are encouraged to tend to their plots as often as possible, but to create the community feel we go gardening together every Tuesday. We learn from each other and from whoever is willing to come teach us something (we are open to collaboration). The aim of the garden is to bring students together that want to garden, learn about gardening, just get closer with plants, form a community of planters and hopefully create a sustainable society. It is also to show student how easy it is to grow your own food and what a meditative experience it can be. There are many reason students join the society - learning about plants, being more conscientious, or looking for a quiet hour with the fingers in the soil.
Please check the latest COVID-19 guidance before your visit.
Open to the public on Event days and to students from 5:00 to 17:00 any day of the week.
