The Small European Raspberry Aphid is a member of the aphid insect family (Aphididae). Aphids are regarded as one of the biggest garden pests. As suggested by their names, they're smaller than the large European aphid reaching only 2mm, but they're pests of raspberry plants too. As well as causing leaf curl in the plants they infest, these insects are carriers of the raspberry vein chlorosis virus. These aphids will produce winged generations towards the end of summer. These migrate to other raspberry plants to lay more eggs, continuing the life cycle.

Traits

These insects carry the raspberry vein chlorosis virus.
Aphids are a food resource for predatory insects like ladybirds and their larvae!

Appearance

The adult insects are a pale yellow-green. They're only 2mm but can best be seen in dense colonies near areas of new growth. Nymphs appear like adults but are wingless and smaller in size. Sometimes they're paler in colour.

Symptoms

Dense aggregations of small, green insects beneath the leaves and near areas of new growth.. Winged adults are produced in late summer. These migrate to other raspberry plants and repeat the life-cycle. Copious amounts of a clear sticky solution may be evident near areas of aphid activity. This is honeydew, a byproduct of aphid digestion.

Biological treatment

By encouraging wildlife to visit your garden you can attract cheap and natural forms of biocontrol to keep pests at bay. These beneficial insects include ladybirds, lacewings, spiders and hoverfly larvae. Insect hotels are an excellent way to do this. Please research insect hotels carefully, as many commercially-bought hotels can be more harmful to insects than good. The key to a good hotel is to get one with removable parts so that they can be washed. Likewise, by keeping some areas wild and planting a variety of seasonal blooms, you can attract beneficial pollinators to the garden, such as hoverflies.

Chemical treatment

You can give plants a plant oil winter wash to eliminate any overwintering eggs. The best time to spray your plants is when insects are nymphs as they are more susceptible to sprays. Organic pesticides sprayed across several applications can be an effective way to control aphid nymphs. Plants that are in flower shouldn't be sprayed with pesticides.

Attracts

This aphid is attracted to raspberry, blackberry and loganberry.
