Why not try growing your own cress heads with your children as a fun and quick activity this summer holiday. It's simple and quick to do.

Using Egg Shells

What You Will Need

A tray of green cress shoots growing on cotton wool.

Garden Cress

Lepidium sativum

  • Cress Seeds
  • Egg Shells or Yogurt Pots
  • Kitchen Roll, Wool or Soil
  • Felt tips or paint
  • Clear Plastic Bottle
  • Scissors

  • If you choose to use egg shells as you container you will want to carefully crack the tops off and clean out the shells gently with water! Don't waste your eggs though. There are plenty of recipes you can use!
  • Gently draw or paint onto the shells to make them more fun for the kids.
  • Now you can choose to use either soil or kitchen roll and wool. If you choose soil, all you have to do is fill the egg shells to about 3/4 of the way up. If you use kitchen roll, take a small piece and put it at the bottom of the shell, then take your cotton wool and wet it and add it to the shell making sure you have some space at the top.
  • Sprinkle some seeds on the top of the soil/wool, but do not cover them!
  • (Optional) Now you can take your plastic bottle and cut it in half and place your eggshell on the bottom half of the bottle and put the top half back on. This creates a mini greenhouse that will keep the cress heads damp and warm!

Using Tights

What You Will Need

  • Tights or Stockings
  • A cup
  • Cress Seeds
  • Soil
  • Rubber Bands
  • Googly eyes, felt, pipe cleaners, etc.
  • PVA Glue

Plant Care

  • Cut the foot end off the tights/stockings and place it inside the cup, overlapping some over the edge.
  • Place some cress seeds inside the tights. Around 2tsp is good.
  • Get your soil and fill the tights almost to the top.
  • Remove from the cup and tie a knot in the end. Turn it over and make sure the seeds are at the top.
  • Now you can start to decorate! You can pinch part of the tights with soil in to create a nose and wrap a rubber band to keep it in place.
  • Decorate it how you wish, making sure not to put anything on the top where the seeds are.
  • Once you are all done, take your cress head and place it on a saucer with plenty of water and sunlight.
  • When the seeds start to germinate, cut a small cross in the top of the tights to help the cress grow on through and enjoy!!
