Spruce up your urban jungle with the fabulous Philodendron 'Birkin'

Philodendron 'Birkin' is a striking variegated plant with glossy deep green leaves streaked with creamy white to yellow pinstripes. In Greek, Phileo means 'to love' and dendron means 'tree', so it's perhaps not surprising that Philodendrons grow as epiphytes in their native habitats in the rainforests of Brazil and Paraguay. If you're all about those tropical vibes then put Philodendron Birkin on your plant wish list.

What is Philodendron 'Birkin'?

Tracing this rare plant's heritage took us down a rabbit hole of Reddit threads. However, it is thought the Philodendron 'Birkin' originally started life as a mutation on a Philodendron 'Rojo Congo', which was then separated and cultivated. Another theory suggests it's a hybrid of 'Rojo Congo' and 'Green-Leaf Philodendron', which originated in Thailand.
Popular with Aroid fans (low light plants from the family Araceae, such as Monstera, Peace Lilies, Pothos and ZZ plants), the Philodendron 'Birkin' might be hard to come by, but the good news is once you land one, it is easy to care for.

How do you care for Philodendron 'Birkin'?

Like most Aroids, the Philodendron 'Birkin' prefers bright filtered light (too much direct sunlight will scorch the leaves). To recreate the warm, humid conditions of its homeland, give it an occasional misting or pop the plant pot on a tray of wet pebbles.
With variegated plants, it's important to keep the leaves clean so that the plant can feed itself via photosynthesis. Use a damp cloth to clean the leaves.

When should I water Philodendron 'Birkin'?

Water infrequently and plant in a loose but rich bark-based soil, which will allow the water to drain freely through the bottom of the pot. Use an all-purpose (preferably organic) liquid feed once a month during spring and summer to encourage new growth.

How big do Philodendron Birkins grow?

It is thought the Philodendron 'Birkin' can grow up to one metre tall with a breadth of 60cm. It is quite rare to find large specimens as they can take up to ten years to reach full maturity.

Can a Philodendron 'Birkin' revert?

Is your Philodendron Birkin losing its stripes, changing colour or growing stippled leaves instead of striped? We've spotted a few Reddit threads that suggest this cultivar has been know to revert back to its original form and could change again in maturity.
