As defined by the Oxford Dictionary:
a group into which animals, plants, etc. that have similar characteristics are divided, smaller than a family and larger than a species
If you see a plant labelled for example Rosa sp., you'll know the plant is one of the many species that belong to the Rose genus. Rosa spp. is used when you want to talk about the genus as a whole.
