A genus of 66 accepted species of annuals, semi-evergreen, evergreen or herbaceous perennials and subshrubs in the Polygonaceae family with a cosmopolitan distribution. They typically have simple leaves and long-lasting spikes of small bell-like usually pink or white flowers. Commonly known as knotweed, some species are cultivated as creeping ground cover and for their Autumn leaf colour.
